Do you agree with this change? Or did you prefer the original name?
“wow i can’t believe george conveniently wrote all of dany’s enemies to be CARTOONISHLY evil, no redeeming qualities whatsoever he obviously did this on purpose to set up the mad dany arc.” i don’t know how to break this to you but that’s just how slave owners are. like yeah you would have to be pretty cartoonishly evil to consider another human being your property…pick up a history book.
A cartoonishly evil villain would be a villain who is evil just because they’re evil, just because they like to hurt people. There are plenty of fantasy monsters who attack villages for no reason. But the slavers are far from that. It’s not like the slavers are evil for the sake of being evil. They are evil because they benefit financially from the exploitation of enslaved people. They are evil because there are centuries of social institutions and traditions that normalize their behavior. That’s not cartoonishly evil, there’s a motivation there, there’s complexity there, there’s a systemic issue. And Dany struggles with these systemic issues; she can’t just kill a few evil people and fix the problem by getting rid of the bad guys. That’s a very complex story and struggle, so it’s ridiculous to see people reduce it to just “Dany’s enemies are cartoonishly evil” (and as stated in the original post above, what did people expect? Slavers ARE evil).
Also, the Starks have Joffrey (who likes to torture and torment people out of pettiness/revenge/whims), Ramsay (who likes to torture and torment people for fun) and Roose Bolton as their enemies. All very cartoonishly evil. Hell, even Tywin and Cersei are still very evil villains, even if they are more complex characters. Dany has the Green Grace and Hizdahr, who are both more complex and less cartoonishly evil than the likes of Ramsay Bolton. So people who complain about Dany’s enemies being cartoonishly evil are just using a bunch of double standards, as always.
